5 reasons to dive around Gili Air

1. “Turtle Capital of the World”

We are incredibly fortunate to be based on Gili Air, which is one of few places on the planet where the chances of spotting a turtle in the wild are pretty much guaranteed. The Gilis are commonly referred to as ‘The Turtle Capital of the world’, and we have a feeling you’re going to agree with that statement – especially after visiting a site like Turtle Heaven!

2. The Marine Diversity

Located right in the middle of the ‘Coral Triangle’ that includes parts of Australia, the Philippines, Borneo, and Papua New Guinea, the area is home to an astonishing 20% of the world’s coral reefs and has more than 3,000 different species of fish and 600 species of coral.

Common sightings include tropical marine life like; turtles, octopus, stingrays, morays, nemos, angelfish, boxfish, pufferfish, lionfish, and lots lots more!
A bit more rare, but not unusual to see; black- and whitetip reef sharks, sea kraits, ribbon eels, seahorses, frogfish, crocodilefish, indian walkmans, blue-ringed octopus, and even mantas and whale sharks during the rainy season.

3. Great Variation of Dive Sites

We dive around all three Gili islands, and sometimes parts of Lombok. The area holds around 30 different dive sites and the variation in topography, terrain, and conditions is amazing. Gentle slopes, coral gardens, wall dives, deep dives, muck dives, pinnacles, and wrecks – the Gilis really has it all!

4. Perfect Learning Environment

We truly are blessed, to not just have an amazing variation of dive sites, but also such a fantastic learning environment! Do you picture diving as an intimidating experience in stormy dark waters, low visibility, and ripping currents? Not here! For the most part, we have incredible crystal clear water with roughly 20-30 m visibility and a temperature around 29°C, calm surface conditions, and shallow depths with sandy bottoms for those who are still working on their buoyancy.

5. The Convenience of It All

Between the ease of travel, with just a quick boat ride from either Bali or Lombok, to the dive boats departing from the beach in front of the dive center, it couldn’t be more convenient to dive the Gilis. In addition to this, all dive sites lay within a 20min boat ride. No more full days stuck on a boat!

We dive at 9 am, 11.30 am, or 2 pm, with night dives available on request – this means that you can do one dive or more, and then spend the rest of your day on the beach, at one of the many great restaurants, or with family members and friends that haven’t yet discovered the awesomeness of scuba.
